Q & A: Chemical interactions between beta-blockers

by Jackie Hart, MD

Q: Are there chemical interactions between beta-blockers, such as atenolol, and saw palmetto?

A: This is a very important question. With the rising use of herbs and over-the-counter dietary supplements that have the potential to interact with medications, it is essential to discuss use of such products with your doctor.

With that said, there is no known interaction between beta-blockers, such as atenolol, (a type of medication used to treat blood pressure and heart disease) and saw palmetto, an herb used to treat the symptoms of prostate enlargement (often referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). In fact, there are no documented interactions between saw palmetto and any medications.

It is recommended, though, that saw palmetto not be used in conjunction with prescription medications for BPH, such as finasteride. This is a good rule of thumb when taking any herbs and medications
